Some applications or games will change your resolution automatically. If a game crashes, you may find your desktop icons cramped in a certain area of the screen. If you hate rearranging your shortcuts over and over again, DeskSave can help you. The application is very lightweight and its functionality is simple, but it will spare you from aligning your icons each time the resolution changes.

DeskSave works on all Windows platforms, from Win 98 to Win 7, in both 32 and 64-bit editions. After extracting its files, from a 182 KB archive, you just need to run the application's executable and it will launch immediately.

The application works in the background. Apart from a general settings menu, there is no interface to speak of. You can find DeskSave's main functions in a context menu, after right clicking its system tray icon. One of these options will save the current layout of your icons, while another will restore it. You can also save one or more layouts as files on the hard drive.

When restoring a layout, the application will create a backup automatically. The created backups can be found in a sub-menu. Selecting a backup can place your icons as they were, before you restored a saved layout. Backups can be useful if you select the Restore option by mistake, but there are other features that prevent you from restoring by mistake. DeskSave will ask for confirmation each time you restore or save a layout.

It is possible to disable the confirmation feature, in the general settings menu, where you can also set the application to run automatically when Windows starts, install a shell extension and more. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, DeskSave can change the size of your icons, when you restore a layout.

Pros

You can save the layout of your icons and restore it instantly. It is possible to save multiple layouts, as files, on your hard drive. The application will back up a layout, before it restores a saved one. DeskSave uses very little disk space and you don't need to install it.

Cons

The application does not restore deleted icons. While using DeskSave, you will never have to align your icons, after changing the resolution. Thanks to its simple, but effective functionality, it takes a single click to restore the layout of your icons.
